The exhibition Materia Spirituale [Spiritual Matter], organized by the Galería Rafael Pérez Hernando at the Monastery of Santa María de Bujedo de Juarros in Spain, weaves a dialogue between Giorgio Griffa’s works and the timeless spirituality of this magical place, whose Cistercian origins go back to the mid-12th century. Works such as Dionysus Two (1980) and Spiral (2023) amplify the constant elevation of thought towards the infinite, imbued in walls of the monastery.
As curator Pia Ogea writes, Griffa “seeks to give shape to the invisible, drawing from a primordial and universal fount.” The rhythmic repetition of shapes evokes a connection between art and nature, past and present, rendering each work an expression of balance between matter and the spirit.
