After inaugurating its Art Space in October 2024 with the group exhibition INSIDE, the Giorgio Griffa Foundation is pleased to announce the opening of UNFINISHED, a solo show by Giorgio Griffa exploring one of the central themes of his artistic practice.

Curated by the GG Foundation, UNFINISHED presents a selection of works chosen closely with the artist, offering privileged insight into the folds and implications of the unfinished. Rooted deeply in philosophical thought, the concept is a key part of Griffa's poetics, a deliberate choice that traverses all of his cycles of painting, embracing and respecting the dynamic nature of time and space. With marks and fields of color that never fully occupy the canvas, Giorgio Griffa’s works remain suspended, open to infinite possibilities—fragments of an ongoing, unfinished dialogue with the world.

“Initially, it was a choice to leave marks or fields of color unfinished, without fully painting the canvas, because in the meantime, life had moved forward—a thought inspired by Zen.
Later, I realized that in doing so, I was omitting the final point that transfers the present into the past. It also seems to me that a trace of the time spent working remains. Faced with space that is indeterminate and expanding, it seemed appropriate to attempt to represent it by merely occupying it, one mark after another, without setting a boundary.
Finally, I understood that an ‘unfinished’ work cannot be perfect. The point is that our static concept of perfection must be adapted to the dynamics of the Universe.”

— Giorgio Griffa

Alongside the exhibition, a projection room will be screening videos that provide an intimate look at the artist’s modus operandi, from the rhythms and gestures of his daily painting practice to his relationship with time, space, and materials.
